Hello my friend:

Last night I saw an old 60's Flintstones cartoon with my
son.  In it, Fred had allergies.  With one strong sneeze,
he blows out his TV screen.  Another one completely messes
up Betty and Wilma's hairdos.  Just then he sees a
commercial for "Scram" pills which claim to stop sneezing,
so he and Barney rushed over to the stone-age drugstore to
get some Scram.

Although it was just a silly cartoon, it also had a lot of
truth to it--our dependence on drugs to create false health
continues to explode in the US.

A recent study by Medco Health Services reported more than
half (50%) of insured Americans take prescription drugs
every day.  That number includes kids!  The most popular
drugs are for high blood pressure and cholesterol.

The "experts" claim that, while this does suggest
Americans are getting sicker, it also reflects more
aggressive treatment by doctors.

Aggressive treatment?  It's more like convenient
treatment.  There's nothing aggressive about writing a
prescription and sending someone on their merry way. 

There IS something aggressive about educating yourself on
how diet creates health, and teaching your patients what
eating right really means.  But of course that would mean
the patients' health would improve and thus an end to the
gravy train.

So we'll see that when pigs fly.

What the continuing rise in legal drug use also proves is
that the billions spent on advertising by pharmaceutical
companies works like a charm, as does their schmoozing
doctors with trips to exotic locations and mountains of
free samples.

I recently thumbed through a magazine on parenting issues
and out of 146 pages, 29 advertised drugs.  That's one out
of very five pages!  Not one page talked about prevention
of disease.  

Not one.   

Medco also did a 6-year study that showed a 20% increase
in drug use by 20 to 44 year-olds for chronic (long
standing--possibly lifelong) conditions.  The biggest jumps
were in drugs for depression, diabetes, asthma and ADD/ADHD.

These are people who are supposedly in the prime of life--
taking drugs daily for chronic dis-eases that are all
caused or worsened by a diet of acid-creating foods. 

And the saddest statistic of all--about 1.2 million kids
take pills for diabetes, sleep disorders and digestive
problems (like heartburn).
