To filter or ionize?  More on water

Hello my friend:

Last Friday's email about water generated a flurry of very
good questions that I want to repeat for everyone's benefit.

*******************

Q:  How can I find out the pH of my water?

A:  You can get pH test kits at pool supply stores or
various online vendors.  You can also check with your local
health department to see what labs in your area perform
water testing.

*******************

Q:  How can I make my water more alkaline?

A:  There are a few different ways:

1.  Special pH drops available at health food stores
2.  There are various products online such as Alka-Life,
pH Booster or similar products.
3.  A very simple way is to add baking soda, sea salt or
fresh (not bottled) lemon juice to your water.  1 teaspoon
per quart will do it.

Q:  What about water ionization systems, reverse osmosis
and distilled water--how do they compare?

A:  I'll use an analogy of automobiles:  Regular,
unfiltered tap water is a rusty "winter rat," filtered or
distilled water is a Honda Civic, filtered or distilled
water with pH drops or other alkalizer is a Lexus and
alkaline ionized water is a Rolls Royce.

There are 2 important considerations about water:

1) Its level of acidity vs. alkalinity

2) What other harmful toxins it has

A water filtration system (like reverse osmosis-RO-- or
even Brita filters) or distillation will help remove
harmful toxins like fluoride or arsenic.  This should be
your bare minimum standard for drinking water--NEVER drink
water straight from the tap.

However, filtering or distilling may take out some of the
good alkaline minerals in the water (specifically calcium,
magnesium, sodium and potassium) which will make the pH of
the water more acidic.  That's when it's necessary to add
an alkalizer to the water to raise its alkalinity.

A water ionizer first filters out toxins from the tap
water (just like RO or Brita) but then it splits the water
up into acid and alkaline waters and maintains the minerals
originally in the water.  As a result, the pH of the
alkaline water can be extremely high-up to 10.0.

Just like with cars, the better the water system, the more
it costs.  A water ionizer can run US $2,000 or more; a
Brita pitcher and filter can be had for around $25.

Q:  How much water should I drink in a day?

A:  There are differing opinions on that, but the one
that's the most logical is based on your size.  Take your
weight, divide by 2, and the answer is the number of ounces
of water you should drink per day.

Example:  If you weigh 160 pounds, 160 / 2 = 80.  You
should drink 80 ounces of water per day.

Q:  If we're not supposed to drink a lot of water with
meals, when should we drink it?

A:  One of the best times to drink a tall glass of water
is first thing when you wake up in the morning, before any
food, coffee, etc.

It's also good to drink water 15-20 minutes before a meal.
This serves a double purpose--you're hydrating yourself and
the water will help make you feel full, so you'll likely
eat less.

You can also drink water 3 hours after a correctly
combined meal--that will allow enough time for the food to
pass from your stomach so you don't interfere with digestion.

Lastly, it's essential to drink water before, during and
after a workout.

Remember--although drinking water is great, the best
source of water is the water in fresh fruits and
vegetables.  Great Taste No Pain is loaded with recipes
featuring alkaline fruits and vegetables that make getting
the water your body needs positively delicious.

thanks to Great Taste No Pain:

Hi Sherry,

I am feeling great! I have IBS and acid reflux and even
though I have always eaten healthy foods, my stomach would
hurt after any meal and every morning and night.

I started the program last week and the first day I was
able to stop taking Miralax, which I had taken daily for
over a year now.  By the end of the fourth day I was able
to stop taking Aciphex daily for my acid reflux.

I've always been thin but I have even lost a little weight
in the last week.  The meals were delicious and even my
boyfriend, who's a bit of a picky eater enjoyed the
dinners.  In fact, he said they were the only meal of his
day that didn't cause stomach pain after eating.

Thank you so much,
Kelley Ryan
