Constipation used to be a regular part of my life. As a
kid who ate a lot of processed and miscombined foods, I
could count on being "blocked up" every week.
I just learned to keep quiet about it to avoid the enemas!
As an adult the results of my eating habits blossomed into
constipation alternating with diarrhea, plus cramps,
bloating and gas. IBS is the technical-sounding label the
gastroenterologist gave it.
If only I had known then what I know now. I could have
avoided years of agony and harm to my stomach and intestines.
Now I 'go' 2-4 times every day.
No straining. Ever. It's over and done in less than one

No feeling like I swallowed a bag of cement.
My stomach is flat every single day--not bloated. No

Diarrhea is a foreign word to my body.

So many people (like myself in the past) think that
constipation is just something that happens. They thing
it's normal for them.
Some think it's genetics. "I come from a family of bad
stomachs."
Not exactly. You may come from a family of bad eaters--
that's more like it.
Others think they have a "disease" and the only way to
have normal bowel movements is by taking drugs.
False.
Listen, if you have constipation on a fairly regular
basis, there is one thing and one thing alone that is the
major cause of it:
What you put in your mouth.
Eating processed foods and eating the wrong foods together
causes huge amounts of acid in your stomach and completely
thwarts your digestion.
And drugs like Nexium make it worse. Yes. That's a fact.
When your foods aren't digested well, your 'doody' doesn't
pass easily through your colon. Instead, it gets hard,
stuck and...you're dethroned and reaching for the Ex-lax,
Metamucil, Senokot or Colace.
And DO NOT believe it's OK to use laxatives on a regular
basis.
It is not...
If you frequently use laxatives over a period of weeks or
months, they can decrease your colon's ability to contract
and move your wastes, and actually worsen constipation.
Plus overuse of laxatives can also damage nerves, muscles
and tissues of the large intestine.
