Now that the kids are back in school, I've been getting a
lot of questions asking my opinion about school lunches.
I realize that all schools are different; however, the
nature and quality of the lunches prepared and served by
the schools is pretty much the same across the board.
Note that my son's school is in one of the top districts
in New York State, so I'm speaking from experience.
I reviewed his September lunch menu and saw that every
single lunch on every single day was a bad food combination
that would wreak digestive hell. Every single one.
Plus each day had either sugar-laden desserts,
artificially sweetened crackers or other type of processed
food being offered as part of the lunch.
I would never, ever EVER feed my son anything remotely
close to the "stuff" (it's not food) on that chart.
I also reviewed lunch menus from school districts in
Texas, North Carolina, California, Oregon, Washington, DC,
Florida and Maryland.
Pretty much the same.
A recent study at Purdue University found that boys
diagnosed with ADHD had low levels of the omega-3 essential
fatty acid DHA. 95% of ADHD children were deficient in
magnesium. ADHD kids only had 2/3 the zinc levels found
in kids without ADHD.
It's no wonder that so many kids are struggling in school,
misbehaving, becoming violent, depressed and being drugged
up because they've been labeled as having a "disease"
called ADD or ADHD.
Their brains and bodies are not getting the nutrients they
MUST have, they're loaded with acid from the combinations
of foods they're getting fed, and they're full of harmful
chemicals, sugar and fat from processed foods.
Listen, for our kids' bodies and minds to function
properly, they need to eat REAL food. Not something from a
can, box or bag with a mile long list of ingredients that's
not only not good for you but is actually downright harmful.
And this opinion isn't coming from some flower power,
granola crunching, nature woman who carries signs at
protests and rallies.
This is scientific fact.
The world's children are being drugged merely by eating
the chemical concoctions touted as food. It's not food.
It's stuff made to look, feel and taste like food with
chemical texturizers and flavorants.
And just like adults, kid's foods need to be correctly
combined, too -- Otherwise too much acid is produced in the
stomach. This causes gas, constipation, stomach aches and
acid reflux, plus most or all of the nutrients in the food
end up being completely destroyed.
And when that happens, the hunger signal kicks in, making
them eat more and more and more...and more.
Nutrients (vitamins and minerals) are absolutely vital for
brain function in both younger children and teens.
For example, a low magnesium level is linked to attention
deficit disorder, autism, depression, fatigue and learning
disabilities.
Low iron levels cause poor brain functioning and erratic
behavior.
Zinc helps balance blood sugar, so kids that are low on it
crave sweets. Zinc deficiency can also lead to anorexia
nervosa, bulimia, frequent headaches, depression with
suicidal ideation, and angry, aggressive behavior.
These are just a few examples of what nutritional
deficiencies do to kids.
And don't think that your kid will be OK if he or she
takes a multi-vitamin everyday.
Because when the body has a lot of acid (from processed
and/or miscombined foods), the acid in the system destroys
the nutrients. So it can't even use the nutrients from a
supplement. Instead those nutrients (plus some more from
the bones and muscles) are used by the body simply to
neutralize the acid.
So if you love your kids, and I'm sure you do, then don't
allow them to buy lunch at school.
Take the time to make them a REAL food lunch.
I know you're busy, but there's time. If you have the
time to watch even one TV show a week, then you have time
to make your kid (and yourself) a real-food, properly
combined lunch each day.
Make the time for your child's well-being (and your own
health too!).

PS: A 16 year-old boy was prescribed Prevacid to overcome
the effects of school lunches. Good thing his Mom knew
what to do:

Sherry,
My 16 year-old was prescribed Prevacid to combat weight
loss associated with vomiting. The doctor, with only a
minimum of blood work done, assumed him to have developed a
problem with acid reflux...not ever once asking about the
boy's diet!
I gave him one round of the medication, without a
remarkable result. Sure, the kid's stomach was less
inflamed, but that wasn't the root of the problem.
I began to pay closer attention to what he was eating, and
as the end of the school year had come, there wasn't that
nasty school food interfering!
With the change in his diet, he is feeling swell, has his
appetite back and doesn't fear food and vomiting!
I'm guessing that his Ph had gotten all out of whack!
