Probiotics are beating drugs for colitis

One of the most painful digestive conditions that about
750,000 Americans suffer from is ulcerative colitis (UC). 

Ulcerative colitis (also called just colitis) is a form of
inflammatory bowel disease where sores develop in the
lining of the colon (large intestine) and rectum.  These
sores bleed, produce pus and cause diarrhea.

In addition to the physical agony of bloody diarrhea,
cramps, fatigue and rectal pain, people with colitis face
the mental anguish from not knowing when an attack will
occur.  Sudden dashes to the bathroom become a part of
everyday life.

Standard treatments for colitis include anti-inflammatory
drugs, especially prednisone (a corticosteroid).  While
they can bring some relief, the consequences can be
disastrous. 

If used for a long period of time, corticosteroids can
lead to Cushing's syndrome--which causes water retention,
weight gain and a puffy, swollen appearance.  (Think
Kathleen Turner.)

Other effects of steroids include muscle weakness, fragile
bones, high blood sugar, fatigue and mood swings.

You do not want these problems.

But wait, Big Pharma's not done yet...

Antibiotics are also prescribed for colitis with limited
benefit.  There may be some improvement in the symptoms,
but they come right back once the course of antibiotics is
over. 

Plus antibiotics completely throw your intestinal
environment out of whack and encourage harmful bacteria to
grow out of control (which make colitis symptoms even
worse).

The last resort for colitis is surgery, but even that's
not a cure-because the colitis can recur somewhere else in
the intestines.  Plus you run the risk of having to wear a
bag on your side to collect your wastes for the rest of
your life. 

Knowing this, colitis sufferers often feel hopeless... 

But if you have colitis, there is hope...

Probiotics.

Numerous studies show that a combination of probiotics can
help alleviate colitis symptoms quickly without any side
effects whatsoever.  The bacteria cited in the research
include:

- Lactobacillus casei
- Lactobacillus plantarum
- Lactobacillus acidophilus
- Lactobacillus bulgaricus
- Bifidobacteria longum
- Bifidobacteria breve
- Bifidobacteria infantis and
- Streptococcus thermophilus

One particular study conducted in the UK gave a group of
colitis patients with just one probiotic strain,
Bifidobacteria longum, for 30 days, while another group
received a placebo. 

After the 30 days, the probiotic group showed a
significant reduction in inflammation, while the placebo
group continued to suffer with symptoms pain, bleeding and
diarrhea.
