As my 11 year-old son and I were running on a wooded trail
on Sunday morning, he pointed out some poison ivy and said,
"We'd better stay away from that, Mom!"
Poison ivy infection is definitely a nuisance but in most
cases, it clears up pretty quickly.
People with eczema are not so lucky--for them, it's like
having poison ivy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Eczema is a skin condition involving inflammation,
redness, itching and blistering of the skin. The urge to
itch is VERY strong, and itching leads to more
inflammation, bleeding and infections.
Over 15 million Americans have the most common form of
eczema, called atopic dermatitis. Areas affected can
include the elbows, knees, face, neck, upper chest and
scalp.
Standard medical treatment for eczema includes topical
hydrocortisone or other anti-inflammatory creams and
moisturizers to be put on the inflamed areas. Also, some
sufferers are given antihistamines, and antibiotics are
prescribed for infections.
But these measures only give limited relief, and using
antibiotics can cause more problems than they solve
(including stomach upset and diarrhea).
What is showing even more promise for eczema is probiotics.
Scientific studies show that probiotics can prevent and
treat eczema:

Preventing eczema
=============
One study conducted in Finland and published in the
British medical journal "The Lancet" examined 159 pregnant
women whose babies were at higher risk for eczema because
of family history. For 2-4 weeks before delivery, half of
the women were given Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and the
others were given a placebo.
After the babies were born, breastfeeding mothers
continued with their probiotic supplement (or placebo) for
6 months, and bottle fed babies were given one or the other
in their formula (depending on what their mother had been
given before birth).
Almost half of the babies in the placebo group developed
eczema. But only 23% (less than 1 out of 4) of the babies
in the probiotic group showed any signs of eczema. And
remember these were high-risk babies who had a family
history of eczema.

Treating eczema
===========
The same group of Finnish researchers conducted a study
with babies who already had eczema by adding Lactobacillus
rhamnosus GG to their formula. After just one month, the
eczema in those babies was significantly diminished.
Similar results were found by giving babies
Bifidobacterium lactis BB-12. Babies in that group were
followed up to age 4, and those who had been treated with
the probiotics had half the rate of eczema compared to
untreated children.
The prevention and treatment of eczema is yet another
reason to take Super Shield multi-strain probiotic formula
every day.
Super Shield contains BOTH L. rhamnosus GG and B.
bacterium BB-12--the strains that were proven in the
studies above to be helpful in preventing and treating
eczema.
Plus Super Shield's 11 other highly researched and well-
proven strains will help keep your digestive system in
order, strengthen your immune system and keep you on a
track to great health for life.
No other probiotic on the market contains this many
research grade probiotic strains. Most don't contain any.
Just weak "little cousin" strains.

Hi Sherry,
I feel great with Super Shield. Along the years of pain
that I have endured due to IBS, unfortunately I have a skin
condition known as psoriasis.
In a recent article that I read you have mentioned that it
is caused by the high acid environment over a long time
endured by the organism. When I got your plan, Great Taste
No Pain, all my symptoms vanished regarding IBS, but the
psoriasis affliction continued.
I am taking Super Shield now. I am cured from IBS, but
the probiotics have worked miracles. Although still
afflicted with the skin condition, I am noticing a slow but
steady improvement.
I am optimistic that by taking Super Shield and a good
diet the skin condition will vanish. Traditionally
psoriasis is treated by rubbing steroid based creams which
do not work, and what about the long term side effects of
steroids.
Thank you for providing Super Shield--it is an excellent
product.
