This seems to be the week for questions about younger
people suffering from nasty health problems.
Here's a great question I received from the Mom of a 20
year-old student:

Hi Sherry,
I have your Great Taste No Pain Manuals & Recipe book--
they are wonderful!
My daughter (20 years old) has had an ongoing yeast
infection. Is there anything we can do to jump start this
process to help her as fast as possible? She has already
been to the doctor's.
This is consuming her life!
She has the puffiness, stomach pain, bloating,
constipation, fatigue, depression--the list goes on.
She is at college so as far as I know she is following
your Alkaline diet as well as she can.
I am running out of what to do to help her.
Please help me if you can!
Thank you for taking the time to get back to me.
Becky B.

SB: Becky, I would love to help you and your daughter.
For your benefit and my readers, here is the scoop on
yeast infections (also known as Candidiasis):
=======
What it is
=======
Candidiasis is a type of fungal infection caused by
Candida, which means yeast.
Candida albicans is usually the culprit that causes
infections in fingernails or toenails, as well as vaginal
infections in women. Another type, Candida glabrata, can
wreak similar havoc.
Yeast (Candida) is ALWAYS present in your body, but as
long as your body's beneficial bacteria are healthy and
strong, they can effectively keep the Candida under control.
However, if your harmful bacteria outnumber the good,
you're a prime candidate for ugly yellowish green nails
that will eventually fall off and, if you're a woman,
chronic vaginal infections.
As most women can attest, vaginal yeast infections are
horrendous--the burning, itching, bloating, fatigue, etc.
greatly impair your quality of life.
==================================
What to do (and what not to do) about yeast
==================================
A common method of controlling Candida is to "starve them
out"--meaning eliminate all carbohydrates from your diet.
But that's not the best or complete solution because you
need carbohydrates.
Without carbohydrates, your body starts to use your
protein to manufacture carbohydrates and your energy level
plummets. Your brain also suffers because it needs glucose
from
carbohydrates, and you can become dehydrated.
The best way to deal with Candida is an easy two-step
approach:
1) Eliminate BAD carbohydrates from your diet as much as
possible. They feed the yeast and keep them thriving (and
pack the pounds on your backside too). That includes white
sugar, white flour and all things made from white sugar
and flour.
Focus instead on consuming GOOD carbohydrates like whole
grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes, seeds and nuts.
Becky's daughter is doing this already, since she's
focusing on more alkaline foods. But it's only half of the
equation.
The other half is:
2) Boost your body's population of beneficial bacteria and
keep them healthy so they can feed on the yeast and keep
them in check.
Research studies have shown that it is important to use
more than one species of strain of probiotics when dealing
with Candida. Two of the superstar, research-grade strains
in Super Shield, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and
Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1, have been shown to be
extremely effective in fighting Candida.
And Super Shield's 11 other powerful strains will work
with L. rhamnosus GG and L. acidophilus DDS-1 in keeping
your intestinal flora in a healthy balance, ready and able
to fight off yeast, bad bacteria, and toxins and pathogens
from your food and the environment.
