If you or anyone you know has IBS, here's some important information. Because IBS is one of THE most commonly diagnosed, misery-causing gut problems.
You won't want to miss a word of this:
*************************************
Dear Sherry:
I have IBS and am feeling so miserable, I don't know who I should listen to.
What do you know about small intestinal bacteria overgrowth (SIBO)? My doctor has mentioned this. Are there any products for such condition?
My doctor wants to prescribe medications (I think one of them is an antidepressant) but I don't want to live my life depending on drugs.
Can you guide me?
Sandra
*************************************
SB: Sandra, I'm very familiar with SIBO. And more importantly, I'm thrilled that you didn't just throw your hands in the air and blindly take antidepressants (and other drugs) that do NOTHING for the root cause of IBS.
I'll explain what SIBO is and, more importantly, what you can do about it -- other than taking dangerous, life-altering medications.
What's SIBO and how does it lead to IBS?
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) occurs when some of the bacteria from your large intestine "slide up" and invade the small intestine.
That's not good and here's why:
Different types of bacteria live in the large vs. small intestines and they each have different functions.
One of those differences is the breaking down of carbs. Most carbs are absorbed in your small intestine with little or no gas produced. The only exception is dietary fiber -- that passes on to the large intestine.
The bacteria in your large intestine break down fiber and as they're doing that, gas is produced. The bacteria usually absorb most of the gas, and any excess is passed as occasional (NOT excessive) flatulence.
However, SIBO is when some of the fiber-gnawing bacteria from your large intestine come up into the small intestine. When this happens, fiber that you eat begins to be broken down too soon -- in the small intestine.
Since your small intestine isn't equipped to do this and it doesn't have the right bacteria to absorb the resulting gas, that means BLOATING and PAIN (the classic IBS symptoms).
Your body's natural defenses against SIBO
Normally three things prevent SIBO from occurring in a healthy gut:
1- Acids in the small intestine kill off any invaders
2- Peristalsis--the contractions that move your food through the digestive tract prevent the bacteria in your large intestine from "swimming upstream"
3- Bacterial "sparring"--healthy bacteria in the small intestine fight off bacteria from the large intestine
But if any of those three natural safety nets is harmed somehow, SIBO can result.
What causes SIBO
One common cause of SIBO is antacids.
Antacids neutralize the acid in the small intestine and make it unable to fight off large intestinal bacteria like it should.
Antibiotics are another culprit...
Antibiotics destroy the protective flora in the small intestine which makes it easier for the invaders from the large intestine to take over.
SIBO has been established as a common cause of IBS symptoms. And the typical "remedies" for IBS -- laxatives, anti-spasmodics and antidepressants -- do absolutely NOTHING to address the cause of what's going on in your gut.
So yes, Sandra, you're right to be concerned about medications. Chances are excellent that you'll feel just as lousy as you do now...maybe even worse.
