Just say the word "colitis" and most people wince, even if they're not 100% sure what it is. For good reason. It's one of the most painful digestive conditions known to man.

Steroids and surgery.

Surgery as in, getting some or all of your colon taken out.

Oh, and one more answer: Recently, antibiotics have been prescribed for colitis...with very limited benefit. There can be some improvement in the symptoms. But they come right back once the course of antibiotics is over.

The new, better answer

At the age of 40 years old I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, although my troubles actually began many years before this.

For years I was experiencing the worst pains ever, explosive bloody diarrhea and my energy levels had hit the floor.
