4 Better, Safer Alternatives to Antidepressants

Of all the health issues in existence, perhaps none is more
challenging to the health community than depression.

What makes that statement even more worrisome is that, like so many other disorders, the numbers have been increasing over the last several decades.

Here are some sobering statistics about depression from the National Institute of Mental Health:

- Approximately 10% (1 out of 10) adults aged 18 and over in the US suffer from depression, and nearly half of those cases are classified as "severe."

- Depressive disorders are now appearing earlier in life. 50 years ago the average age of onset was 29--now it's 14!

- Antidepressant use in the US jumped nearly 400 percent in the 20-year period between 1988 and 2008!

Now, the begging questions here are:

What's going on? and
What can we do about it?

Let's first take a look at...

What's been done so far--the rise of antidepressants

Since the early 1990's, antidepressants have increasingly become the treatment of choice and convenience for depression.

Their promises were attractive -- just taking a little pill to feel happier is a very enticing proposition to someone who's depressed. And the fact that you didn't even need to see a psychiatrist made them easy to get -- your family doctor could write your script and send you on your way to the land of the merry.

And while some people have reported improvement in their symptoms from antidepressants, many have paid a very dear price.

For example, some of the common effects of SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) like Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Lexapro, and Celexa are:

- Nausea
- Nervousness (so instead of being depressed you're nervous)
- Headaches
- Sleepiness
- Sexual dysfunction
- Dizziness
- Stomach upset
- Weight gain

Plus, the elevated levels of serotonin caused by SSRIs in some cases can cause changes in your cell neurons that can be classified as brain damage!

And ALL antidepressants are required by the FDA to carry a warning about the risk of suicidal thoughts, hostility, and agitation.

If that doesn't scare you, I don't know what will.

But the bright ray of hope in the dark world of depression is this:

Drugs are NOT your only option.

Because there are other safer answers...and even the psychiatric community is getting on board!

Here's an example:

Exercise for depression

A study reported in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry showed that when people suffering with depression who were not getting adequate results from antidepressants (and most don't) added regular exercise into their daily routine, they improved DRAMATICALLY.

To the tune of 30% achieving FULL remission of their depression!

I commend those professionals for looking at other approaches besides the prescription pad for their patients.

Other answers

Now, exercise is a FANTASTIC way to help combat depression, but it's not the only one.

Treatment with a skilled therapist is another. Note that just because someone has MSW, PhD or MD after their name does not make them "skilled."

Just as in ANY profession, there are good and not-so-good therapists. If you are working with a therapist and it isn't helping or all they want to do is push drugs at you, find another one.

In addition, there are three other approaches you can take to help beat depression safely, naturally, and with no frightening side effects.

They are:

Natural depression remedy #1: Food

There is a definite connection between food and mood.

Many people who suffer from depressive disorders are deficient in certain vitamins and minerals, especially B-complex vitamins and magnesium.

The typical diet most people have (lots of processed foods, fast food and refined carbohydrates) is inherently deficient in those and other nutrients. Plus a diet like this creates lots of acid wastes, which makes it harder for your body to absorb whatever nutrients you are taking in.

As a result of the "age of convenience," our reliance on packaged and fast foods has increased dramatically over the last 50 years...and so has reported cases of depression.

That's not a coincidence.

And it's also a major reason why we're seeing depression at younger and younger ages--our kids' diets are as bad as or worse than adults'.

The great news is that increasing numbers of people are seeing a DRAMATIC improvement in their depressive symptoms once they start eating more real foods (and decreasing the acid wastes in their body).

When you make food your drug, help your pH be more alkaline and nourish your body in the way it needs to be, your body and mind can function SO much better.

You can accomplish these important goals simply by following my advice in the Great Taste No Pain health system.

Great Taste No Pain is not a diet--it's an eating lifestyle that helps you attain a good acid/alkaline balance and efficient digestion.

There are just a few simple principles to remember, and I explain it all in everyday language simple enough for the average 10 year old to understand.

Natural depression remedy #2: Vitamin B12

Current studies show that as many as 25% of people may have or are seriously close to developing a vitamin B12 deficiency.

When B12 levels run low, that can cause a wide range of vague symptoms from head to toe including:

- Lack of energy
- Memory problems
- Sleeplessness
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Vision problems
- Weakened immune system
- Mental fog or confusion

and...

Depression!

That's right...

A Vitamin B12 deficiency can trigger depression and mood swings.

The good news is a B12 deficiency is extremely easy to tackle. All you need is a high quality supplement that stands a good chance of being effectively absorbed.

And Hydroxaden 2.5 delivers on both.

Hydroxaden 2.5 is a convenient Vitamin B12 spray that gives you a daily dose of the most powerful form of vitamin B12 (hydroxocobalamin).

Just five little sprays under your tongue each day give you a full 2.5 mg. of B12 (that quickly gets into your blood stream) to boost your energy, help sharpen your mind, enhance your immune system and fight depression.

In addition to a crucial dose of Vitamin B12, Hydroxaden 2.5 also gives you niacin (Vitamin B3), Vitamin B6 and riboflavin (Vitamin B2)--which can help address the nutrient-deficient depression I mentioned above.

Natural depression remedy #3: Omega-3 EFAs

Studies have shown that people who have a diet inherently high in Omega-3 essential fatty acids (such as the Japanese, who eat lots of fish) have a much lower rate of depression.

As a matter of fact, the traditional Japanese diet contains about 15 times more Omega-3 fatty acids than the American diet, and Japanese people have one-tenth the rate of depression of Americans.

That's no accident.

Plus current research is showing a lower incidence of depression in people who have a high intake of Omega-3 essential fatty acids.

Help in alleviating or preventing depression is yet another great reason to be sure your Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acid balance is where it should be.

And VitalMega-3 can help you achieve this crucial balance.

VitalMega-3 is a pharmaceutical-grade fish oil supplement that delivers a whopping 1,200 mg of Omega-3s in each and every daily two-capsule serving.

It's processed from small fish like herring, sardines, anchovies, and mackerel that contain the highest natural oil content.

And its state-of-the-art purification process means you don't have to worry about PCBs or mercury like you would by eating fish.

If you or someone you love suffers from depression, don't think that SSRIs are the only answer.

Try the safe, natural approach and see how much better you can feel, both physically AND mentally.

To your health,

Sherry Brescia

PS: Lorna started feeling better after just 2 weeks:

Dear Sherry,

I have been following your Great Taste No Pain plan for 2 weeks now and I am happy to say that this is the best I have felt in three (3) years!

At first I didn't think it was going to work because some of the recipes call for foods that I know can trigger IBS. I just went along and did the combination and after eating from the plan I felt fine.

This is the first time in three years (for a full 2 weeks) I have not taken Nexium, Gaviscon, the list could go on--I have taken every tablet there is for IBS and acid reflux.

I now have energy and I feel much better about myself; no more depression, no more sleepless nights.

I am so happy that I have come across this plan. I will share it with my friends who also suffer from IBS and acid reflux.

Thank you very much.

Lorna

As we age, our supply of digestive enzymes decreases. This is especially true for people who eat lots of processed food and hard to digest meals. Foods such as these require LOTS of enzymes to break them down and over time your body's ability to produce enough enzymes is diminished.
