According to the
National Mental Health Association, nearly 4.5 million
kids in
the US have ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).
And that figure is
double for adults--nearly 9 million are affected!
Up until now,
stimulant medications have been the treatment option given to
people with ADHD, with some being on them for DECADES.
The drug companies
are bursting with cash as a result. So no one involved in ADHD
drug marketing wants information about natural, effective
solutions to be publicized...Because the money train would stop
dead on the tracks.
Never mind that there
is NO way to tell what the effects of such long-term use of
psychostimulants may be...it could be years before the cause and
effect relationships make themselves clear. Until then there are
a lot of guinea pigs walking around dutifully taking their
Ritalin.
Know this: Just
because a doctor prescribes a drug does not mean it's safe. Many terrific kids have dropped dead from psychostimulants. As in dead
forever.
Remember, smoking was
also considered safe and even healthy by the medical profession
not too many years ago...
Until people started
dying from lung cancer, that is.
And don't ask me to
explain why someone with HYPERactivity is given a stimulant to
begin with. The claim is they allegedly "have a calming effect
on people with ADHD."
Hmmm. So does that
mean if they take a sedative, they're up all night?
A shift in
thinking
The good news here is
that there are signs of a major shift in thinking about ADHD
treatment.
This was evident in
an article published recently about a woman whose 10 year-old
son was diagnosed with ADHD. She didn't want to go the
medication route and instead was asking about safe, natural
alternatives.
The doctor who
addressed her question described how behavioral therapy has been
shown to be helpful with the behaviors and symptoms of ADHD
children.
He also gave her a
list of suggestions for the family to implement that would
support the therapy and help the process along.
He explained that,
although behavioral therapy is a lengthy process that requires a
lot of cooperation between the child, his family, teachers and
therapists, it can make a dramatic difference in the child for
the rest of his life.
That doctor should be
commended, applauded and knighted.
Talk about a long
overdue, refreshing change of pace--a natural, safe way of
managing what can be a very challenging and life-altering
condition.
And there's
MORE you can do
Now, although the
doctor's suggestions were OK, that's just the beginning.
Because there are two
significant factors that have been shown to induce or contribute
to ADHD symptoms.
When you know about
them, and more importantly DO something about them, it can make
a night and day difference for someone with ADHD.
ADHD Solution
#1: The nutrient connection
Nutrients (vitamins
and minerals) are absolutely vital for proper brain function in
everyone, but especially in younger children and teens.
Here are some
examples:
Magnesium
Magnesium is used in
over 300 enzymes, many of which are BRAIN enzymes. A low
magnesium level is linked to ADHD as well as autism, aggressive
behavior, over-excitability, anxiety, depression, fatigue and
learning disabilities.
And what makes it
worse is when kids that are low on magnesium drink a lot of
milk.
You see, calcium
needs magnesium to be absorbed by the body, so a huge intake of
milk zaps up an already-low magnesium supply. That means there's
little or none left for the brain.
Iron
Iron is like the
body's oxygen shuttle, carrying oxygen from the lungs to every
cell in your body.
Low levels of iron
can cause poor brain functioning and erratic behavior.
Zinc
Many brain enzymes
are zinc-dependent, so it's essential that the brain has
adequate supplies of zinc.
In addition, zinc
helps balance blood sugar, so kids that are low on it
crave sweets and refined carbohydrates and reject nutritious
proteins and vegetables.
Zinc deficiency can
lead to angry, aggressive behavior, bulimia, frequent headaches,
depression with suicidal ideation and anorexia nervosa.
These are just a few
examples of what nutritional deficiencies do to kids, and how
they can contribute to ADHD symptoms and behaviors.
And what makes the
nutrient deficiency problem even worse is that many kids exist
on processed and fast food, which are gravely lacking in
nutrients. In addition, these foods create acid waste buildup,
which makes it even harder for the body to absorb any nutrients
that are taken in.
So it's easy to see
how deficiencies can occur...and ADHD symptoms can worsen.
Keep in mind that ADHD-like symptoms are becoming more common in
our world primarily due to the changes in our
eating habits due to the availability of processed convenience
foods.
So it's not just
possible to stop ADHD in your life, it's easy, too...for your
kids AND yourself.
The Great Taste
No Pain health system can show you delicious ways to enjoy
healthful foods loaded with nutrients that are both easy and
kid-approved.
When your meals are
made from REAL food (not processed or fast food), not only do
you inherently get more nutrients from your meals, but you get
them in a form that your body can actually absorb and use
them....
...From head to toe.
And here's something
I bet you didn't know -- when you're better nourished, you eat
less. So excess poundage can slide off before your very
eyes...good news for the growing number of overweight and obese
kids (and adults).
ADHD Solution
#2: The ADHD gluten connection
Researchers currently
estimate that nearly 1 out of 3 people is the US is gluten
sensitive or intolerant.
Gluten sensitivity
can wear many masks and manifest itself in seemingly unrelated
ways like skin problems (including acne, psoriasis, eczema and
hives), autoimmune diseases like arthritis, diabetes and IBD,
digestive problems, chronic fatigue and...
...ADHD!
That's right.
Gluten sensitivity is
commonly seen with or produces the same symptoms as attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Considering that the
diets of most average kids are heavy on cookies, cakes,
crackers, hamburger and hot dog rolls, pizza, pasta, cereal and
chips, their bodies are inundated with gluten...they're loaded
with it.
And so their ADHD
diagnosis can very well be a simple gluten sensitivity.
So get rid of the
gluten, and be done with the ADHD problem!
Now, if you suspect
gluten may be causing problems for you or your kids, but dread
